Music Video / Short
The official music video for 'Nothing Left At All' by Jelly Roll: a 7-minute narrative short film. Written, directed and edited for It Goes Up Inc.
The brief
Jelly Roll wanted 'Nothing Left At All' to be more than a music video. His exact words: 'a 7-minute short film with an insane twist and ending.' The song is raw and emotional, about loss, self-destruction, and reaching the point where there's nothing left to lose. A standard performance video wasn't going to do it justice. This needed narrative structure, real acting, and a visual arc that earned its ending.
The approach
We built a narrative short film around the track, complete with a cast, scripted scenes, and a dramatic structure that unfolds over the full seven minutes. The visual tone is naturalistic and grounded. No flashy effects, no stylized color. Just real-feeling scenes that let Jelly Roll's vocal performance carry the emotional weight while the story happening around him raises the stakes.
The twist ending was the anchor of the entire concept. Everything was reverse-engineered from that final reveal. Every scene had to track emotionally so that when the turn hits, it recontextualizes everything the viewer just watched.
This project was a proof of concept for something I believe deeply: music videos don't have to be disposable. When the song is this honest, the video should be a short film.
The result
The video released March 13, 2020 through Strange Music and immediately resonated with Jelly Roll's fanbase for its emotional storytelling. It demonstrated that independent music video production can deliver narrative filmmaking at a level that competes with anything coming out of LA or Nashville.
For Jelly Roll, who has since become one of the biggest names in country and hip-hop crossover, this video sits in his catalog as one of his most ambitious early visual projects, produced years before his mainstream breakthrough.
